Sunday

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman take a break from their busy film-star schedules to get back to solving dense mysteries in a three-episode season of "Sherlock" (9 p.m., TPT, Ch. 2). No show this year will give your brain a better workout.

Monday

Even "The Powerpuff Girls" (6:30 p.m., Cartoon) need a little help from their friends. Ringo Starr guest-stars as Townsville's most famous flamboyant mathematician and performs the soon-to-be hit "I Wish I Was a Powerpuff Girl."

Tuesday

The idea of "American Masters" tackling J.D. Salinger is enticing. Too bad "Salinger" (9 p.m., TPT, Ch. 2), an expanded version of Shane Salerno's 2013 feature documentary, offers no real insight into the elusive writer and is fueled almost entirely by trivial anecdotes. Salinger remains a mystery.

Wednesday

Amy Poehler is executive producer for "Broad City" (9:30 p.m., Comedy Central), a sitcom about twenty-something women that's less ambitious than "Girls," but much funnier. The promising series stars veteran sketch artists Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, who created the series.

Thursday

"Rake" (8 p.m., KMSP, Ch. 9), which is being sold as "House" with a lawyer, should be compelling since it has Greg Kinnear in front of the camera and Dudley Riggs veteran Peter Tolan behind it. But the first episode lacks the bite that Tolan brought to "Rescue Me." Let's hope that future episodes go deeper in exploring the lead character's dark side.
