Authorities in Polk County, Wis., are seeking the public’s help in locating a pickup truck that struck and killed two people Saturday night in a tribal community northeast of Balsam Lake.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the two male victims had been involved in an altercation at a residence that spilled out into the roadway on County Road E near Big Round Lake.

They were struck about 6:30 p.m. by a southbound pickup, which stopped briefly but then fled the scene. At least two people — both believed to be males and both wearing baseball caps — were in the pickup, authorities said.

On Sunday night, Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Steve Moe said in an e-mail that authorities still were searching for the vehicle.

The victims’ names are expected to be released Monday, he said.

Earlier, authorities described the pickup as dark-colored, possibly a Ford, and added that it may have two auxiliary amber warning lights mounted on the top of the cab. Witnesses reported seeing a blue plastic barrel in the bed of the truck, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The truck may have sustained headlight and undercarriage damage.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 1-715-485-8300.
