No write-in candidates register with city

Voters may want to think twice before casting a ballot for a write-in candidate this Election Day.

Write-in candidates were required to register with the city this year in order to be considered during vote tabulations. No one did.

That means any votes for Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other fictional characters will merely be lumped into a "write-in" total when all the ballots are counted.

In 2009, 211 people cast their ballots for write-in candidates in the mayor's race, .47 percent of all votes. Some were for fictional cartoon characters, but others for legitimate former politicans.

The write-in process was changed this year to improve the already complex ranked-choice counting process.
Unregistered write-ins are eliminated on the second round, based on the new ordinance.
