Lindsay Whalen was nearly unstoppable again as the Lynx beat San Antonio 87-71 on Friday night at the AT&T Center to extend their winning streak to a season-high five games.

Whalen scored 21 points and had seven assists to lead the Lynx who, at 12-3, have the WNBA’s best record. They won for the 11th time in their past 13 games against the Silver Stars. It was the fourth loss in a row for San Antonio (4-12).

The Lynx, behind Whalen’s 11 points, took a 26-14 lead in the opening quarter. Whalen came into the game averaging 20 points in her past seven games and stayed hot. She went 10-for-15 from the field.

This was her sixth game of the season — and fourth consecutive — with at least 20 points.

“I told Lindsay that she’s one of the greatest leaders I’ve ever coached,” said Cheryl Reeve, the Lynx coach. “Lindsay Whalen is coming out and setting the tone for us, she’s hard-nosed, she’s tough-minded, she’s physically tough, all of those things, and she really led the way for us and got us off to a really good start.”

“Pushing the ball was key for us,” Whalen said, “and that’s what we tried to do the whole night. We wanted to make those plays and play together as a team with team defense and team offense.”

Seimone Augustus, who missed the past three Lynx games because of a sprained left ankle, started and played almost 20 minutes, mostly in the first half, making two of six shots to finish with four points.
