High school basketball fans can’t seem get enough of Minnesota’s “big three’’ of Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis. Those dreaming of the possibility of seeing them play together got the chance to indulge their fantasy Friday night at Augsburg College.

The Clash of the Classes, sponsored by the North Star Hoops Report website, featured matchups between teams consisting of the best players in their respective graduating classes. Jones, Vaughn and Travis, all among the top 50 Division I basketball recruits in the nation, played together for the first time on the Class of 2014 team. They didn’t disappoint, helping their team to an 11-point halftime lead en route to a 109-100 victory over the Class of 2015 team.

Travis led the 2014 team with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Vaughn added 19 points and a pair of highlight-reel dunks, including one in which he brought the ball between his legs in midflight. Jones, always the playmaker, had nine points and seven assists. Travis’ DeLaSalle teammate, Sacar Anim, led the 2015 team with 25 points.

Jefferson wins consolation title ... again

Heading into the state softball tournament, Bloomington Jefferson coach Fred Wroge was concerned about the draw the Jaguars received for their quarterfinals game. In 2011, they lost to eventual Class 3A champion Hastings in the first round. In 2012, they were blanked by Mankato East, which was essentially playing a home game at North Mankato’s Caswell Park. Jefferson went on to win the consolation championship both times.

In this year’s quarterfinals, the Jaguars drew Maple Grove and its talented pitcher, Sydney Smith, who already had given a verbal commitment to Louisiana State even though she’s just a sophomore. Wroge was right to worry. Smith shut the Jags downs on three hits, sending them to their third consecutive quarterfinals loss, 2-1.

And, just as they had in 2011 and 2012, Jefferson bounced back strong. The Jags defeated Stillwater 3-2 in the consolation semifinals and Orono 6-3 to win the consolation championship for the third consecutive year.

Ultimately, state champs

The state high school Ultimate Frisbee tournament was held June 1 and 2 at the National Sports Center in Blaine and teams from the west metro won both the boys’ and the girls’ championships.

Hopkins defeated Edina 15-12 to win the boys’ championship while Minneapolis Southwest defeated Armstrong 12-7 in the girls’ final.
