Olympian Franklin sets national record in meet at U

Olympian Missy Franklin won the 200-meter butterfly with a national age-group record and fellow Olympian Ryan Lochte won two events on the opening night of the Minneapolis Grand Prix on Friday at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center.
Franklin won in 1 minute, 42.28 seconds to set a national record for 17-18-year-old girls. She was four seconds ahead of second-place Dagny Knutson, who touched in 1:46.70, in the first meet of the Grand Prix season.
Lochte won the 200 freestyle in 1:35.15 after catching Mads Glaesner of Denmark, who led most of the way. Glaesner was second in1:35.69.
Lochte later won the 100 butterfly in 46.73. Kyler Van Swol of the Gophers was second in 47.66.
Olympian Claire Donahue won the women's 100 fly in 52.71, more than a second ahead of the field; national team member Mike Alexandrov led all the way in winning the 100 breaststroke in 52.80; and 14-year-old Becca Mann won the 400 individual medley in 4:10.29 -- 11 seconds ahead of the field.
The meet continues Saturday.
Before the competition, Franklin said she is content waiting for the endorsement money that's bound to come her way after her five medals -- four golds -- at the London Olympics.
"Someday, I would love more than anything to be a professional swimmer, but right now I just want to do it because I love it. Being part of a college team is something that's so special," Franklin said.U volleyball falls
Michigan State upset the Gophers, in second place in Big Ten volleyball, 25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20 in East Lansing, Mich. Katherine Harms led the Gophers with 16 kills. Tori Dixon added eight kills and six blocks. The Gophers (20-6, 11-4) hit only .218 and had nobody in double figures in kills besides Harms.Etc.
•Sophomore Leandro Toledo of the Gophers lost in the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. UCLA's Marcus Giron beat Toledo, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
•The Gophers women's cross-country team finished third in the Midwest Regional in Springfield, Mo. Iowa State won the meet with 63 points, Oklahoma State was second with 95, one point ahead of Minnesota. The top two teams earned automatic spots in the NCAA meet, the Gophers could get one of the 13 at-large berths. Three of their runners made the all-region team with their high finishes: Molly Kayfes was eighth, Laura Docherty 16th and Ashlie Decker 20th. ... The U of M men's team was seventh in its regional race in Springfield. Junior Derek Storkel was its highest finisher at 36th.
•Trailing by two sets, St. Benedict rallied to beat Northwestern 22-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-10 in the semifinals of a NCAA Division III volleyball regional at St. Thomas. Lexi Alm had 20 kills for the Blazers. St. Benedict will play the Tommies for the region title at 7 p.m. Saturday. No. 8 St. Thomas (36-1) beat Wisconsin-Eau Claire 25-22, 25-16, 25-21 for its 31st win in a row. Kelly Foley had 12 kills and Jill Greenfield 11 for the Tommies.
