Chuck Aoki of Minneapolis scored 12 goals, helping lead the U.S. men's wheelchair rugby team to a 53-43 defeat of Japan on Sunday in the bronze medal game of the 2012 Paralympics in London.
Six of Aoki's goals came in the third period, during which the Americans opened an eight-point lead to 39-31.
Australia defeated Canada in the gold medal game, 66-51. Canada had defeated the U.S. team 50-49 in the semifinals Saturday.
Aaron Pike of Park Rapids, Minn., finished 16th in the T54 marathon at the Paralympics on Saturday. He finished the 26.2-mile course, which wove past Buckingham Palace, along the Thames River and other landmarks in the city, in 1 hour, 36 minutes, 26 seconds. His time was 6:06 behind gold medal-winner David Weir of Great Britain.
Pike was second among the five Americans who finished the race. In the T54 marathon, modified wheelchairs are used.
The Closing Ceremony of the Paralympics was on Sunday night. Ten Minnesotans had participated in the Paralympics.Miller, Kampf win titles
Craig Miller won the men's title and Heather Kampf the women's race at the Grandma's Minnesota Mile in downtown Duluth.
Miller, of Madison, Wis., finished in 4 minutes, 1.4 seconds. He beat Australian Craig Huffer by 0.2 seconds.
Kampf, of Minneapolis, edged former Gophers teammate Gabe Anderson by a second to win in 4:36.5.
The winners earned $2,500.Etc.
• The Gophers men's golf team, at 43-over 619, was in 12th place in the 15-team field after the second round of the Gopher Invitational at Spring Hill Golf Course in Wayzata. California was in first at 12-under 564, followed by SMU at 14 shots back. The final round begins at 8:30 a.m. Monday.
• South Dakota State running back Zach Zenner, a sophomore from Eagan, was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Jackrabbits' 31-14 victory at Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. He had 34 carries for 278 yards and a touchdown.
