It was a suggestion floated in 2008. It was the "word on the street" in March of 2009. He was a rumored top contender in April 2010.

And now it's back: former U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman might want to be the next Republican National Committee chair, Politico says.

Coleman, himself, didn't confirm any interest but Politico got a nameless "confidante" to speak of it:

A close confidante, however, said Coleman is "intrigued by the [RNC] opportunity."

"He's got a strong and growing interest in at least talking to people about if this makes sense for him to do," said the confidante, who nonetheless emphasized that Coleman is thinking chiefly about this November's elections.

This time it must be real, right?

Update:

Coleman gave the Star Tribune's Kevin Diaz the same non-answer he gave to Politico: "My focus is on the 2010 elections. We have a huge opportunity to stop the Democrats out of control spending and losing this opportunity would be devastating for the country."
