What a difference a day makes in politics. Or at least a change of channels. On Monday, Michele Bachmann's ex-campaign manager, Ed Rollins, was on MSNBC hypothesizing that if "she somehow, for some reason, could win Iowa, then she could get another look." But even if she did, he had said, "she doesn't have the ability or the resources to go beyond Iowa at this point in time." But that was so 24 hours ago. On Tuesday night, Rollins was on Fox with Bill O'Reilly, saying "she's the best candidate in this field. I've watched a lot of candidates over my 40 years in politics, she's an enormous candidate and very, very strong on the stump." Now if she wins Iowa, which was always her plan, according to Rollins, "she's still in this race." Winning the Ames straw poll, Rollins added, was an unexpected surprise. But now that she did, "we built an enormous organization that's still there. So my sense is she's very competitive." On Monday Rollins also agreed that Bachmann's comments linking the HPV vaccine to mental retardation were "appallingly irresponsible" (USA Today's words). On Tuesday, they only hurt her and were something he trusted people would "forget," (O'Reilly's word). Bottom line for the ex-manager-turned-consultant-who-sometimes-disses-her-on-TV: "I love her."
