DFL Gov. Mark Dayton Monday tried again to forward revenue ideas in hopes of reaching a shutdown-ending budget deal with Republicans.

Lowering and broadening the sales tax, increasing sin taxes, ending tax breaks all were on his Monday list. Although he said none were his preference -- that remains an income tax increase on the wealthy -- he said he would be willing to sign them into law to end the historically long government shutdown.

"I'm willing to look for other sources of revenue," Dayton said. He said he hasn't received any counter-offer from Republicans since he made another stab at finding a solution last week. "In the meantime, I'm just offering varying possibilities. I want to get this resolved. The people of Minnesota want to get this resolved...I've offered everything I can think of to get this matter settled."

Standing in front of the now-closed Minnesota State Capitol, Dayton said he plans to travel the state to explain to Minnesotans what's at stake in the budget fight. He will travel to St. Cloud Tuesday, then move on to Rochester and other points in the state later in the week. He said he also plans to release a video message to the people of the state.

Because of the shutdown he will be driving, not taking the state plane.

Republican legislative leaders plan to react to the governor's announcement shortly.

(Update) Republicans legislative leaders said they want to have a conversation with Dayton about spending and reform, not who gets taxed and how much.

They also said that they are continuing to work on a counter offer for Dayton but did not put a specific timeline on their counteroffer. They have not made a concrete offer since the start of the shutdown.

Sen. Dave Senjem, R- Rochester, said he expected Dayton would be well received in his neck of the woods. But that doesn't mean the governor will have support for tax increases.

"You can walk down the street and there's a lot of, 'Hang Tough, Dave's," Senjem said. The former Senate minority leader said, "I don't believe in jumping off the cliff. I always thinks there's a way we can make this work and I do this time as well. We just have to find the right recipe."

Asked what that recipe was, Senjem replied: "Lord only knows."
