Who is "Chuck Scheffler?"

In a high-profile speech in Iowa, former Gov. Tim Pawlenty thrice during his 13-minute talk referred to the event's host as "Chuck" or "Chuck Scheffler." The problem? The president of the Iowa Faith & Freedom and the host of the event was Steve Scheffler.

After his talk, Pawlenty was informed of his error -- and then, it seems, compounded it.

"There's a Chuck Scheffler in Minnesota and, of course, Steve doesn't like his new name 'Chuck' so I'm sorry," the likely presidential candidate said, when he returned to the microphone to apologize.

But no one named Chuck or Charles Scheffler shows up in Minnesota public records, according to Star Tribune searches.

As noted by Harry Niska, a Minnesota Republican activist, there is a "Chuck Shreffler" in Minnesota. Shreffler is an attorney, who is active in Republican politics.

Sadly, it remains unclear if Pawlenty got the name wrong of the Minnesotan he mentioned when he apologized for getting the name wrong of an Iowan. Despite repeated requests for clarity from Pawlenty spokesman Alex Conant, none was forthcoming.

If you know of a Minnesotan Chuck or Charles Scheffler please sound off in the comments.

Here's the video of the event. Pawlenty refers to "Chuck" two minutes in, four minutes in and eight minutes in. (The former governor's new-found Southern accent arises about 10 minutes in.)
