Winona police officers shot at a man, striking him once, during a traffic stop early Saturday that resulted in a car chase and an hourlong standoff at Hwy. 43 and Interstate 90 in southeastern Minnesota.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting of the man, who was booked into the Winona County jail after receiving medical treatment at Winona Health in Winona and St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

A BCA news release did not identify the suspect in the incident, which occurred in the 1800 block of Garvin Heights Road in Winona, or why the officers fired their weapons. The release did note that a .45-caliber handgun was recovered from the vehicle, and radio transmissions of the incident recorded by the Police Clips web site indicate the man may have shot at the officers.

The officers, accompanied by an unarmed reserve officer, stopped the man due to erratic driving, according to the BCA. At some point, the man fled the scene in his vehicle, and the officers and Minnesota State Patrol troopers pursued him. Winona County sheriff's deputies deployed stop sticks on the road that ended the chase.

The man refused to exit his vehicle, and Winona's emergency response unit was called in, the BCA said. The man surrendered after an hour of negotiations.

The officers were placed on administrative leave, standard practice, while the state investigation into the shooting incident is ongoing.
