VICTORIA

Three Rivers restores Carver Park prairie

Three Rivers Park District is restoring a prairie in Carver Park Reserve in Victoria.

The park district received a $200,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' Conservation Partners Legacy grant program — which is allocated from the Outdoor Heritage portion of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment — to restore 165 acres of an old field to prairie. The new prairie will be added to the 50 acres of prairie already in the park, which was originally planted in the 1990s.

The project will begin this fall, removing shrubs and trees but keeping oak trees to give the old fields an oak savanna habitat. In the spring, a trained burn crew will burn the area, then treat it with herbicide to kill the nonnative grasses. The site will be seeded with a variety of native grasses and wildflowers similar to what is found in the existing prairie, as well as a cover crop of oats.
