MODERN MARVELS

Metropolitan Home, the shelter publication, is long gone, but this book pays homage to the mag's annual celebration of the best in modern design and architecture.

Magazine-like in its glossy presentation and great photography, "Metropolitan Home Design 100: The Last Word on Modern Interiors" (Fillipacchi, $45) fills a void. From No. 1 (Most Striking [and Surprising] Fireplace) to No. 100 (Most Masterly Millwork in Manhattan), the book is a visual tour de force that leaves the reader wondering, "How could I get a house like that?"

Look no farther than the back of the book, where five pages of credits and contact info are supplied. While each page wows anew, a special nod must go to No. 72, Most Enchanting Secret Passage, where a collage of silver convex mirrors lights up white walls and woodwork, like some Wonderland-esque warren.

'REAL WOMEN' WANTED

Here's a modeling job where "calluses are a plus" and "dirty fingernails are a prerequisite." Duluth Trading Co., a workwear retailer based in Belleville, Wis., is looking for a new catalog model to showcase its overalls, utility vests and other gear.

Professional posers need not apply. Instead, "hard-working women" are encouraged to enter the search at www.duluthtrading.com before Aug. 13. The winner will receive a $1,000 Duluth Trading shopping spree and the opportunity to take part in photo shoots this fall.
