The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Becker County that left one man wounded Thursday evening after a car chase.

Two Becker County deputies responded to a 911 call at 7:25 p.m. about someone in Cormorant Township — about 150 miles northwest of St. Cloud — threatening to kill people.

Deputies spotted the suspect's vehicle heading north on County Road 5 and tried to stop him. The officers then began their pursuit at speeds of more than 95 miles per hour, the BCA said.

The chase continued north on County Road 5 and then east on U.S. Hwy. 10 before ending just east of Audubon, Minn., after the suspect's vehicle struck tire deflation spikes deployed by the State Patrol.

According to the BCA's preliminary investigation, the man immediately emerged from the vehicle brandishing a rifle toward the deputies. Both deputies fired their weapons, striking and injuring the 55-year-old man from West Fargo, N.D.

He is being treated at Essentia Health-Fargo hospital, the BCA said.

The two officers, patrol Sgt. Dan May and deputy Daran Borth, who both have been with the Sheriff's Office for three years, were placed on standard administrative leave. They were not injured.

None of the officers was wearing a body camera, but several squad cameras may have captured parts of the incident, the BCA said.

Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will turn its findings over to the Becker County attorney's office for review.

A passenger in the vehicle during the pursuit was interviewed by agents and released.
