Senior competes in international contestA Wayzata High School senior was among about 100 students from across the world to compete recently in the International Linguistics Olympiad held at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Duligur Ibeling took two exams earlier this year to qualify for the contest, which is one of 12 International Olympiads. The event brought together 102 high school students from 19 countries to solve problems such as involving Faroese orthography, Nahuatl semantics or the rules of Sanskrit poetry.

He won a silver medal as an individual and his U.S. team placed first with the highest average score. The silver and bronze medals both went to Russia. The next Olympiad will be held in Slovenia in 2012.

MINNEAPOLIS

Students perform in SpotLight CabaretTop Minnesota high school theater students will perform Monday as part of the Hennepin Theatre Trust's SpotLight Cabaret Series.

The "Croon and Swoon" show will be at 7 p.m. at the Fine Line Cafe in Minneapolis. Thirteen students from Centennial, Eagan, Eastview, Hill-Murray, Minnetonka, St. Francis and Wayzata high schools will perform at the second of three shows.

The final show will be held in October.

Resource West hosts back-to-school driveResource West is collecting school supplies for more than 1,000 students.

The west metro assistance organization provides students with a new backpack filled with school supplies, three pairs of socks and underwear.

Class of '61 celebrates high school reunionThe Robbinsdale High School Class of '61 will celebrate a 50-year reunion at 6 p.m. Sept. 10.

The event costs $65 and will take place at the Northland Inn Hotel, 7025 Northland Drive in Brooklyn Park.

EDINA

School celebrates new playgroundCornelia Elementary School in Edina will celebrate the opening of a new playground Wednesday.

The "Picnic in the Park, Play on the Playground" celebration will be from 5 to 7 p.m. and features ice cream and entertainment. The new playground has more than 8,000 square feet of equipment made from sustainable materials. It was built and funded by volunteers and the school's PTO, with sponsorship by Edina-based remodeler MA Peterson.
