Brooklyn Park police have reported the discovery of what appear to be human skeletal remains in Brookdale Park.

A person walking through a wooded area in the southern part of the park Friday found the remains, which appear to have been there for an "extended period of time," said police Inspector Todd Milburn.

Police were called about 12:40 p.m., and the Hennepin County medical examiner's office and crime lab were at the scene investigating Friday afternoon.

"It's going to take us some time to work through this and see what we have," Milburn said.

Authorities have yet to determine with certainty whether the remains are human.

Police plan to look into whether there have been any people reporting missing in the area.
