A Maplewood hospital patient who died after he was arrested for attacking and injuring four nurses early Sunday has been identified as Charles Emmett Logan Sr. of St. Paul.

The Ramsey County medical examiner's office finished an autopsy Monday and will report its findings to the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which took over the investigation at the request of the Maplewood police and Ramsey County Sheriff's Office.

Family members reached Monday declined to comment, but Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell said they told officials that Logan's behavior was uncharacteristic.

Logan, 68, had been hospitalized at St. John's Hospital since Wednesday, suffering from bouts of confusion, before attacking the nurses with a metal bar about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Schnell said that officers found Logan about three blocks from the hospital, and when he refused to drop the bar, Deputy Richard Werdien fired a Taser at him. But the probes on the stun gun didn't make contact. At the same time, Deputy Mark Suchy rushed him and took him to the ground. The deputies, along with a Maplewood officer, handcuffed him; he went limp and later died.

All three officers were put on standard administrative leave.
