A 54-year-old man was struck and killed in Shoreview on Friday afternoon by a Minnesota Transportation Museum train.

James John Cunningham was on the tracks, possibly taking a picture, when he was struck about 2:30 p.m., said Ramsey County Sheriff's spokesman Randy Gustafson.

"They rounded a curve and they saw him standing on the tracks, sounded their horn, applied the brakes, tried to stop," Gustafson said. "They were unable to do so."

Cunningham, who lives nearby, died at the scene, Gustafson said.

The train was being moved from the Museum's St. Paul facility to a depot in Osceola, Wis. It struck Cunningham west of Rice Street and north of Interstate 694.

The engine was pulling vintage train cars.
