Historical Society unfurls new 1862 website

The Minnesota Historical Society has unveiled a new website of oral histories, citizens' stories and historical sources in one spot as a handy online clearinghouse for information about the 1862 U.S. Dakota War. The bloody six-week war 150 years ago raged around New Ulm and the Minnesota River Valley.

When 38 Dakota men were hanged in Mankato that December, it marked what remains the largest mass execution in U.S. history. The Star Tribune's four-month project on the war, "In the Footsteps of Little Crow," includes videos, maps and an e-book option. Check out startribune.com/dakota to visit the project page.
