On the heels of approving single-sort recycling, the Minneapolis City Council is now setting its green sights on the city's outdoor events.

Council Member Betsy Hodges has proposed changing city ordinances to require organizations that host block parties, parades and races to put together a recycling plan.

That means providing recycling bins, using signs to encourage recycling and delivering recyclables to a processing facility.

The proposal would affect events that already require a permit. It would only apply to block parties of more than 300 people, or those that feature the sale of food or beverages 2,500 people.

Hodges said she learned about the issue when a constituent reported not finding adequate recycling options at a local event.

"I looked into it and realized it wasn't a requirement. And it surprised me. And I think it surprises people when they hear it's not a requirement."

She noted that the city has a sustainability plan and has been exploring options to increase residential recycling, such as transitioning to the single-sort recycling containers.

"I think this is part and parcel with that," Hodges said.

The city's transportation and public works committee will discuss the proposal at their meeting on Tuesday.
