A 30-year-old man has been found guilty and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for fatally shooting someone during a back-yard argument late at night in Stearns County.

Marcus M. Barshaw, of Walker, Minn., was sentenced Friday for first-degree murder in the shooting death of Jeffrey J. Schutz, 30, of Rockville, on Oct. 21, 2012. A deputy shot Barshaw hours later while pursuing him.

According to prosecutors:

Deputies called to Schutz's residence in the 300 block of Broadway Street E. found Schutz on the ground less than a half-mile from his home and dead from at least six gunshot wounds.

Two people said Barshaw and Schutz were arguing in the back yard. At one point, Schutz told Barshaw not to point his gun. Schutz began running and was shot numerous times by Barshaw, who then ran from the scene.

During the four-hour manhunt, Barshaw was found hiding in a nearby apartment building. He was shot by a deputy after coming out with what appeared to be a semiautomatic assault rifle and a pistol, then raising one of the weapons at a deputy, authorities said.

Barshaw also found guilty of first-degree assault of a sheriff's deputy and for assaulting another person.

Barshaw's criminal history in Minnesota includes two minor theft convictions and a conviction on a misdemeanor weapons charge.
