Lundie cabins on tour

The eighth annual tour of vacation homes designed by Edwin Lundie will be held Saturday in the Schroeder, Minn., area.

This year's tour on the North Shore will feature two of Lundie's signature Alpine-inspired, timber-framed cabins with a distinctive red cabin color scheme.

Lundie, a St. Paul architect, designed 17 cabins and summer homes along an 80-mile stretch of the North Shore in the 1940s through the 1960s. The picturesque cabins combined a rustic look with craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The tour also will include four vacation homes on the shore, including some designed or remodeled by architect Dale Mulfinger, author of a book on Lundie's work.

"The tour is attended by architects, designers and people who enjoy and appreciate the history of the North Shore and its architecture," said Steven Lukas, one of the organizers and a Lundie cabin owner. "Many attendees have returned year after year."

Registration for the tour begins at 10 a.m. at the Cross River Heritage Center along Hwy. 61 in Schroeder. The tour will begin at 1 p.m., with transportation to the sites provided. The tour concludes about 5 p.m. with a picnic at one of the Lundie cabins.

Before the tour begins, Mulfinger will give a free talk at 10:30 a.m. at the Heritage Center on the art and science of designing and remodeling cabins and homes.

Cost is a $150 donation. For more information or reservations, call 1-218-663-7706. The annual event is a fundraiser for the Schroeder Area Historical Society and the restored Heritage Center, which has a Lundie exhibit.
