Butterfly festival

Help celebrate the monarch butterfly's 2,300-mile migration from Minnesota to Mexico at the Monarch Festival on Saturday at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis.

The festival, which runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will focus on the butterflies that make such an incredible journey. You can learn more about monarch habitat, their migratory path and help researchers tag and release butterflies for tracking. You also can pick up tips on how to attract monarch butterflies to your yard. And two native-plant nurseries, Landscape Alternatives and Outback Nursery, will have butterfly-loving native plants for sale.

The festival also highlights the Minnesota-Mexico connection with food, music and dance. Plus there will be prairie tours and 5K and kids' fun runs.

On Friday, the movie "The Incredible Journey of the Monarch" will be screened at 8 p.m. outdoors by the Nokomis Community Center. The free Monarch Festival, at 4955 W. Lake Nokomis Pkwy., is sponsored by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Go to www.monarchfestival.org.

Bulb seminar

Fall is the time to plant bulbs if you want a garden full of Technicolor tulips in April. Bachman's is holding a "Growing Spring Flowering Bulbs" seminar on selecting, planting and adding bulbs to your existing garden beds.
