Lakeville South sophomore Mitch Herrera is poised to make a run at qualifying for his first Class 2A boys' swimming state meet this season. Here is a closer look at Herrera, who specializes in the freestyle events:

The best movie I've seen in the last year? "Troll Hunter." My teammates know what I mean.

Three songs I never skip on my iPod are? I don't really listen to my iPod a lot. I use it more to play games.

Three words my friends or teammates might use to describe me? Funny, energetic, competitive.

How did you get started in swimming? I broke my arm twice between fifth and sixth grade. My physical therapist recommended swimming as a form of therapy to help rebuild the strength in my arm.

At my first varsity practice, I felt ... normal. I swam with most of the team through club swimming.

How do you balance school and athletics? I do my homework when I get home from practice every day and make sure I study for tests a couple days before. Procrastinating is something I try to avoid, although that's hard to do. Also, my parents make sure I get all my stuff done.

What is your favorite meal before a meet? I really like smoothies and sometimes pasta.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete? Placing in the top three at the section meet last year in both of my individuals events.

What are your goals for the 2011-12 season? I want to place in the top eight at sections and at state. Hopefully, I can build on what I did last year.

What did you work on in the offseason? I train to improve on everything; my technique, strength and endurance. I swim competitively through my club team (South Metro Storm).

To get focused for a meet, I... stretch, eat food and relax. I try to just be as calm as possible and not to be too serious or stressed out.

Who is your school's biggest rival, and why? Lakeville North. We are in the same town and practice with each other daily. It's fun to compete against people you train with and happen to be your friends.

I know I have an edge on an opponent when ... I talk to them pre-race and they are nervous. To me, you have already lost the race if you don't have the confidence you can win it. You can't win anything without confidence in your abilities.

If you could change one thing about high school sports, what would it be? Gold medals.

When you have time off during vacation, what do you like to do? Relax, sleep and play "Call of Duty."

Who is your favorite college or pro sports team and why? Chicago Bears. I was born in Chicago.

In 10 years, I hope I ... having a successful career and I am not living with my parents.

Do you have a secret talent -- and if so, what is it? I am a fantasy football guru.

What is the best sports advice you ever received? "Perfect practice makes perfect races."
