One of our drummer friends – who else would have a subscription? – alerted us today to the fact that the Twin Cities' own Dave King is gracing the cover of the new issue of Modern Drummer magazine. "Dave King brings it to a fever pitch with the Bad Plus," reads the headline on the October issue. The magazine's other recent cover subjects have included everyone from Blink-182's Travis Barker to metal giant Vinny Appice to locally beloved jazz vet Roy Haynes (anyone who knows King's story knows he would be thrilled to be in the latter two's company).
We haven't seen the article yet, but it likely keys off the Sept. 25 release of the Plus' eighth album, "Made Possible," which the trio made in Upstate New York. Hopefully, the write-up also shares a little love for last year's underrated Dave King Trucking Company album, and maybe the sorely missed Happy Apple, too, which is finally performing again Sept. 8-9 at the new Icehouse on Nicollet Avenue. King is also still a part of Halloween, Alaska, but Jeremy Hanson of Tapes 'n Tapes has been filling in at gigs of late for obvious reasons. Case in point: King will be touring with the Bad Plus all over Europe and North America through the fall before wrapping up the year with their usual post-holidays week stand at the Dakota (Dec. 27-29).
