Driving Miss Daisy

Opening: Wendy Lehr and James Craven, respected and talented actors, appear together for the first time in their long careers. Bain Boehlke directs the production of Alfred Uhry's familiar play about a vinegary Atlanta matriarch and her chauffeur. Perhaps the play has weathered so well because it centers on mortality and friendship in the context of race and age. The film, which starred Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman, was the only Oscar winner ever based on an off-Broadway play. Uhry won the 1988 Pulitzer for "Daisy," which was the first of his trilogy about the Jewish experience in the South. The Jungle Theater's staging also includes Charles Fraser as Daisy's son.
