Joana Carneiro guest-conducted the SPCO through a storm-related lights-out on Sunday afternoon.

The SPCO's final concert with guest conductor Joana Carneiro and guest pianist Shai Wosner took place Sunday afternoon at the nearly full Ted Mann hall at the U of M. When the storm that damaged big chunks of the north side of Minneapolis swept through, the sirens could be heard in the concert hall, and Carneiro waited for them to go silent.

As the musicians began playing John Adams' "Son of Chamber Symphony," the lights grew dimmer, and then they went out, forcing the music to stop. When the lights came back on, the players started from the beginning and ran through the Adams (thrillingly) without further incident.

Careneiro has become a regular guest with the SPCO, leading some to speculate that she may become an Artistic Partner there. The SPCO would not confirm that, but Carneiro is booked to lead the orchestra three times in the 2011-2021 season.

Wosner handled the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 with seeming ease, and recieved an enthusiastic ovation. For his encore, he left some scratching their heads when he performed an atonal 44-second piece by Schoenberg, the Little Piano Piece, Opus 19, No. 2. Video below features that piece, starting at 1:30. Below that, a video of Wosner playing Schumann.
