Continued: Schafer: Debt ceiling debacle leaves scars and doubts

It’s difficult not to see these events in Washington this week as marking the end of an era, and it was partly nostalgia that led me Tuesday evening into my home office, where I was leafing through a file. In it were three envelopes, each holding a Series EE U.S. savings bond.

My dad bought them years before he died, knowing that my daughters would one day redeem them and use the money for college.

It’s a fine family tradition that I should continue, but there will be one big difference. Unlike my dad, I can’t be absolutely certain that any U.S. savings bonds I buy will be redeemed one day.
