We'll admit it. We were a little curious last night about the debut of the UFL -- yet another upstart pro football league hoping to carve a niche in this football-mad world.

So on one channel -- after the huge, fictional wedding between two people who aren't together in real life -- we had on the MLB playoffs. On the laptop we had the UFL live stream going, with an eye occasionally drifting toward the Wild gamecast (where in the first period, it seemed as though Martin Havlat was instant offense ... for the Kings. Seriously, minus-3 in barely over three minutes of ice time?).

We showed the RBBH the UFL business, and she immediately had some commentary on the uniforms (which we must say looked too much like each other). She likes the day-glo green on the California team's shoulders. The red of the refs, though, is pretty jarring. One nice thing about the league is that it should make Stu's Hunt Downs easier. Pretty much any ex-Viking or coach that's still of age to be participating seems to be part of this league. Of course, Las Vegas -- QBed by J.P. Losman and coached by Jim Fassel -- defeated California (coached by Denny Green), causing a co-worker to quip, "First 41-donut. Now this. How much can poor Denny take?" Yes, we had forgotten the Fassel-Green coaching matchup reunion.

Perhaps the best news to come out of everything -- unless you are a huge Dodgers fan or a mortal enemy of Matt Holliday -- is that the Twins/Yankees game is a 6 p.m. start Sunday. So we're looking at another pretty nice sports weekend: Tonight: Twins at Yankees, 5 p.m.; Saturday, Gophers vs. Purdue at TCF Bank Stadium (we'll be making our first appearance as a fan if all goes according to plan, and seeing how emotional Marthaler is during these things); Sunday, Vikings at Rams at noon, then Twins/Yankees at 6. Monday, Twins/Yankees at 4 (if necessary, and it will be necessary). We'll be working the Yankees angle from the Dome on Sunday and Monday.
