U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Illinois, is being evaluated at Rochester's Mayo Clinic, according to a statement from the clinic.

He arrived at the clinic "for extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues," the clinic said in a brief news release. "Further information will be released as Congressman Jackson’s evaluation proceeds."

"Congressman Jackson and his family are grateful for the outpouring of support and prayers that have been received throughout his care," the news release said. The release came after various news outlets reported he was being treated at Mayo, based on unnamed sources.

Jackson, son of Rev. Jesse Jackson, had retreated from public appearances over the summer. Several weeks ago, his office released a statement saying he was being treated for exhaustion, later revising that saying he would need "extended in-patient treatment."

The Mayo Clinic has long treated famous and powerful people, along with less well known people in medical need.
