It may be known as one of the most dangerous parks in Minneapolis, but Peavey Park in the past year got a bit safer thanks to a concerted effort by the Minneapolis police and the neighborhood. Now, thanks to a design from the Metropolitan Design Center at the University of Minnesota's College of Design, it could get a major facelift. The work is still a ways off -- the design proposal may get an unveiling at the Park Board meeting next week -- but it shows some deep thinking into how to make an urban park safe. The bottom line: make it busy.

The design team used examples from parks in New York, Los Angeles and as far away as Galway, Ireland and Germany to show what's possible. Their vision, seen on page 30 of this document, might get funding in 2013 if it wins approvals, said Mary Watson, of the Ventura Village Neighborhood Association.
