General Assistance Medical Care covers single adults who earn less than $8,000 a year and who are generally ineligible for Medicaid. About 32,000 people on the program will transfer to MinnesotaCare.

The Legislature voted to extend GAMC for 16 months. Gov. Pawlenty vetoed it, saying it would inappropriately spend $170 million as the state faces a $1.2 billion shortfall.
