The jet stream typically marks the boundary between colder air masses to thenorth and warmer air masses to the south. Thus we see storms develop rightalong the jet stream where the largest temperature gradient exists. This week, the jet stream is positioned in such a way that an active stormtrack exists from the central states to the Northeast. We have already seen onestorm come through. That one caused violent thunderstorms and tornadoes acrossthe Great Plains and Midwest Monday and Monday night then a soaking rain fromthe Great Lakes to the mid-Atlantic region Tuesday.
The next storm in the series will leave the Rockies for the Great PlainsWednesday then track eastward from there. Again a large area from Nebraska andSouth Dakota eastward will get a substantial amount of rain from thisdisturbance. To the south, there will be another outbreak of destructivethunderstorms.
