A new round of severe weather will target the nation's southern midsection later today into tonight. The latest storm to emerge from the Rockies will trigger the intense thunderstorms. Tornadoes are amongst the threats of the strongest thunderstorms.

The severe thunderstorms will erupt this afternoon in between Chanute, Kan., and Houston, Texas. The thunderstorms will push over the lower Mississippi Valley tonight. The cities of Springfield, Mo.; Little Rock, Ark.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Shreveport, La., will be threatened.

Any of the tornadoes that touch down could cause destruction and threaten lives. The potential for the tornadoes to turn deadly increases at night.

People may sleep through warnings or tornado sirens. Motorists will have a hard time seeing the twisters.

The strongest thunderstorms will also be capable of producing damaging winds, window-shattering hail and blinding downpours. Anyone at risk for today's severe weather is strongly urged to take immediate action if a storm-related warning is issued for your area.
