A Minneapolis school bus driver hit and killed a man Monday morning in south Minneapolis, school officials said.

The man was identified Tuesday as Josue Gochez Perez, 27, of Minneapolis, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office said. He died of blunt-force injuries and mechanical asphyxia.

The crash occurred about 6:45 a.m. near the intersection of E. 28th Street and S. Cedar Avenue, said school district spokeswoman Crystina Lugo-Beach.

Perez was walking east on 28th and was hit by the bus as it turned left from eastbound 28th onto northbound Cedar, said police, who did not say precisely where the man was struck.

"The report is that somebody is still trapped under the bus," emergency dispatch audio said shortly after the man was hit. The victim was dead at the scene.

One student on the small bus at the time, reported by police to be 8 years old, was not hurt "and was safely transported" to River Bend Education Center in north Minneapolis, Lugo-Beach said.

The driver also was uninjured. The district contracted with Septran for the bus and the driver.
