One person was killed and two injured after a police chase ended in a crash Saturday night in Robbinsdale, authorities said.

The incident began about 8:15 p.m. when an eastbound vehicle traveling about 55 mph on 42nd Avenue N. over Hwy. 100 passed a Robbinsdale officer going in the opposite direction.

The officer tried to stop the vehicle, but it turned down an alley and eventually onto Orchard Avenue for several blocks, reaching speeds estimated at 70-90 mph.

At 39th Avenue N., the officer ended their pursuit, but as the fleeing vehicle entered the intersection, it collided with a white minivan.

Rescue workers used the "Jaws of Life" to extricate the minivan's occupants — the 34-year-old driver, who was taken to North Memorial Health Hospital, where she died, and an adult male passenger, who was reported in critical condition.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle was taken to North Memorial with injuries that weren't serious, authorities said. Police said the man, who was alone in the car and wearing a mask during the chase, was a 20-year-old from Minneapolis.

He was arrested and was to be taken to Hennepin County jail.

The Minnesota State Patrol crash reconstruction crew and the county Sheriff's Office were called to the scene to help the investigation.
