Ruth (Kahn) Kobart

Kobart (Kahn) Ruth, age 78, of San Francisco. Preceded in death by brother, Rabbi Robert I. Kahn of Houston. Survived by brother, Howard Kahn & Zelia Goldberg; sister-in-law, Rozelle Kahn; nieces and nephews, Naomi Kahn-Ramliden & Kent Ramliden, Deborah Morse-Kahn and Judith Kahn, all of Mpls, Edward & Susan Kahn, Alfred & Betty Kahn and Sharon Kahn & Peggy Stamy, all of Houston, and grand-nephews and nieces. Ruth Kobart had many careers: in opera, Broadway musicals, theatre, film and television. She made her professional debut in 1947 with New York City's Lemonade Opera. Later she sang with the New York City Opera, appearing in `Carousel,' `The Mikado,' `The Inspector General,' and the New York City premier of `The Ballad of Baby Doe,' and in the premier of Menotti's `Maria Golovin' in Brussels with the NBC-TV Opera. Her Broadway career included principal roles in `How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying' (and in the film of the same name) and in `A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum' for which she was nominated for a Tony award. Ms. Kobart came to San Francisco in 1967, joining the American Conservatory Theatre in its first season, and in six subsequent seasons, appearing in many plays, including `Tartuffe,' `Thieves' Carnival,' `The House of Bernardo Alba,' `The Threepenny Opera,' `Hotel Paradiso,' and `Sunday in the Park With George.' She spent many years touring as Miss Hannigan in `Annie' and one year in San Francisco in the revival of `One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.' She appeared in many guest roles for television and in such films as `Dirty Harry' and `Sister Act I & II.' Funeral services THURSDAY, 11 AM, TEMPLE ISRAEL, 2324 Emerson Ave S., Mpls.
