Jonas Dr. Herbert, age 87 of Roseville. Devoted husband of Charlotte Jonas, he will be missed greatly by Charlotte and by his sister, Gertrude Jonas of Boston, MA, by his sisters-in-law, Gretel Lowinsky of Chicago and Alisa Grosser of Israel, his cousins, Dr. Herbert and Miriam Jonas of St. Louis Park, as well as by 8 nieces and nephews. Herbert was born in 1915 in Dusseldorf, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1934. After receiving his PhD in Botany, he worked for the Navy during WWII. After that, he performed research for the United States government in Oak Ridge, TN and later was Professor of Botany at the University of Virginia. He then became a Professor of Pharmacognosy at the University of Minnesota, where he taught for many years until his retirement. In addition to having much expertise in his own field, he also had many other interests, and had a breadth of knowledge in areas as varied as Economics and Jewish History. Funeral service WEDNESDAY 1:30 PM, MOUNT ZION TEMPLE, 1300 Summit Av, St Paul. Memorials preferred to donor's favorite charity.
