Schaefer, Carolyn Mae Age 54, of NY., NY passed away July 13, 2015 after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Carolyn grew up on the shores of Long Lake, MN and moved to New York City in 1979 upon graduating from Orono High School. After graduating from New York University with Degrees in Economics and Russian Language, she pursued her passion of photography by documenting stories in and about New York City for the next 30+ years. Her work and personal assignments also took her around the globe - from Mongolia to Borneo, New Zealand, Morocco, India, Cuba and countless other destinations where she captured artistic details and memories on film. Her photos appeared in numerous galleries and publications worldwide including the New York Times, New York Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, Travel & Leisure and was featured in Nikon World Magazine. She also taught as a Mentor at the American Photo Magazine's Mentor Series. Carolyn was a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She was an inspiration in her last years as she offset pain with courage - deterioration with dignity - and suffering with appreciation. Her love of life and spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew her. Preceded in death by sister Catherine Schaefer. Survived by parents, Vincent and Patricia Schaefer; sisters, Diane (Fred) Miller, Janet (Martin) Schaefer-Schneider and Elaine (Joseph) Geelan; nieces, Margaret and Kirsten Miller; nephews, Jason Schaefer, Dane Miller, Colin and Nate Geelan; many other relatives, as well as close friends. Carolyn made a tremendous contribution as President / Project Manager to the community garden across from her building in Harlem.
