Spons Nellija Spons Dieva Miera...Aizgajusi. In the twilight of memory, we shall meet once more - Nellija Spons (Petersons), born April 24, 1915, Vilzenu Pagasta, Kilos, Latvia, passed away August 1, 2002, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Nellija is survived by her husband, Janis Spons; daughters, Brigita Smits and Ieva Spons; son, Gunars Spons; sons-in-law, Valdis Smits and Howard Paris; daughter-in-law, Ruta Spons; grandchildren, Lisa Smits Samaraweera and husband Piyum, Maija Smits, Ivars Spons and Gundega Spons. She is beloved by all those whose lives she touched with gentleness and understanding. She will be remembered as a woman who had a passion - life. ``For in truth it is life that gives unto life.'' `'Three handfuls of summer, my homeland's summers, Give me to take along when this sun is setting; Sighs are not needed, tears are not needed, Silence! Let the bumblebee sing in the wild caraway.'' A memorial service for the immediate family will be held at 4:00 PM Thursday, August 8, at the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, 2205 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Latvian Lutheran Church, 400 Hurley Avenue, Rockville, Maryland, 20850 c/o Rev. Anita Varsberga. The monies will be sent to the Lutheran Church in Aloja, Latvia, erected between 1774-1776, where Nellija was baptized - for their restoration fund.
