Greer Alverna Kathern (Wilmes) - Passed to God's hands at the age of 69 and was surrounded by her family, friends and Catholic priest on Monday, July 29. Alverna was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 28, 1932. She was the beloved and devoted wife to Curt Greer for 52 years; devoted and loving mother to six surviving children, Doug Kirks, Vicki Little, Steve Greer, Denise Stapleton, Wayne Greer, Kurt Greer and a deceased child Kathern Greer; devoted and loving grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; devoted daughter of the late Michael and Leona Wilmes and loving sister to Eugene Wilmes, Gerald Wilmes, Frank Wilmes, Rita Carter and the late Michael Wilmes. Alverna attended Catholic schools and church and always retained her faith in and devotion to God. She was married on October 20, 1951, in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she resided until 1955 and then moved to Arizona for the next 19 years. In 1967, she and her family moved to Rocklin, California. In 1974, Al and Curt Greer moved to 10 acres in Newcastle, California where she lived out the remaining 25 years of her life enjoying her interests in the various flower, vegetable and fruit gardens and trees. She loved sharing her home and the beauty of the landscape with her friends, family and neighbors. She had always been a great listener and caretaker in hopes to help others and had wished to become a nurse. However, her family was always most important to her and she found her life skills, compassion, dedication and knowledge was best used in raising her children and supporting her husband. She had the opportunity to put her love of nursing skills to work in 1964 when her husband was severely burned. She was devoted to his care and survival. Al (as her family and friends referred to her) inspired the lives she touched with love and unwaivering devotion and unselfishness. She will be missed by everyone she touched. A viewing will be held at 10 am on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 4450 Granite Drive, Rocklin, California 95677. A memorial mass will be held at 11 am and family, friends and guests are invited to an on-site reception in rememberance of Alverna following the mass.
