Dorothea Grace Malm

Malm Dorothea Grace Malm of Minneapolis, passed away suddenly on July 17, 2003 at the age of 88. Dear sister, fond and generous aunt, accomplished author and artist. Preceded in death by parents Edward Clifford Malm and Annette Quam Malm and sisters Marguerite Malm and Francis Malm. Survived by her sister Mildred Malm Hossfeld of Minnetonka and brother Robert Malm (Betty) of Pacific Palisades, CA; nieces and nephews Lawrence Malm Hossfeld, Leslie Malm Blessing, Anne Malm Hossfeld, Eric Malm (Amber), Nancy Smith (Michael), Laura Malm, and Evan Malm (Lisa); and 14 grandnieces and grandnephews. Dorothea was born July 9, 1915 in Glenville, MN. She grew up in Minot, ND, where the family moved to join relatives, and returned to Minnesota with her family in 1924 where they resided for many years in Glen Lake (later incorporated into the City of Minnetonka. In the 1970's she lived in Milwaukee and Portland before returning to Minneapolis in 1980 where she resided until her death. Dorothea had a lifelong passion for literature, history, drawing, painting, and illustration. Received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota and Master of Arts from Radcliffe College. Taught school for two years, worked as an editor at the Ladies Home Journal where she was a friend of Cleveland Amory of the Saturday Evening Post, finally settling down to a full-time career of writing fiction. Her short stores have appeared in the Ladies Home Journal, Womans Home Companion, Colliers, Good Housekeeping, Womans Day, Family Circle and many other popular magazines in the US, Canada and England. Her first novel, "Pamela Foxe", was published in 1947. In 1965, her book "Every Third Thought" was performed in Londons West End as the play "Season of Goodwill" starring Dame Sybil Thorndike. An avid commentator on the world and a world traveler, she visited Europe several times, returning home once on the Andrea Doria shortly before it sank in collision with the Stockholm in 1956. An insatiable reader with eclectic tastes ranging from English history and literature to biography, poetry, architecture, photography, art history, fashion and design, and politics. Dorothea was an inspiration to two younger generations of writers and artists. Private interment at Lakewood Cemetery. Rest in peace. WERNESS BROTHERS 612-927-8641
