Grote, Patricia Duffield 91, died of natural causes on January 10, 2006 at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community, Raleigh, NC, her home for the past 11 years. She was born August 15, 1914, in Wheaton, Illinois, the daughter of Robert and Carolyn Duffield. She married Henry Grote, her childhood sweetheart, in 1938 and during their married life lived in Illinois, New Jersey, Belgium, England and Japan as his work took them throughout the world. During their retirement years, they lived in Lake Zumbra, MN. and Seven Lakes, NC, prior to moving to Springmoor in 1994. Her parents, her brothers, Robert and Edward, and sisters, Carolyn and Marian, preceded her in death. Henry, her beloved husband of 65 years, passed away four months ago. Surviving children are daughter, Virginia Buchanan of New Bern, NC, sons, Philip Grote and wife Martha of Chaska, MN, Daniel Grote and wife Jean of Eden Prairie, MN, and Henry Grote and wife Geraldine of Menomonie, WI. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren. They are Kenny Grote of Menomonie, WI, Vogel Grote and wife Shari of Jordan, MN, Lev Grote and wife Kanako of New York City, Sasha Grote and wife Colleen of Shoreline, WA, Cord Grote and wife Crista of Ft. Collins , CO, Alex Grote of Ft. Collins, CO, Erin Buchanan Wright and husband Jamie of Salt Lake City, UT, Sean Buchanan and wife Alison of Saline, MI, Cara and Rebecca Buchanan, both of Raleigh, NC; five great- grandchildren: Corbin, Chandler, Ella Rose, Silas and Sever. Patty had many interests throughout her life. She was an avid gardener, raising beautiful orchids, and also enjoyed sewing, knitting and art. She was an accomplished watercolor artist and studied Sumi-e, the art of Japanese brush painting, during her years in Japan. She later taught Sumi-e in North Carolina. The family wishes to thank Patty's many friends at Springmoor, especially the staff at the Stewart Health Center, for their loving care during the past three years. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish to honor her life, memorial contributions may be made to the Springmoor Endowment Fund or the Alzheimer's Fund. A private family graveside service of interment will be held in her hometown of Wheaton, IL. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.
