Mayberg Donald MacMillan Mayberg, M.D., age 80, unexpectedly passed away 9/25/05, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, after a brief illness. Dr. Mayberg was a well-known and greatly respected psychiatrist who still maintained an active clinical practice at the time of his death. A graduate of the University of Minnesota and U of M Medical School, he was in practice almost 50 years. Don was a fighter pilot in WWII and a flight surgeon in the Korean War and did his residency at the Veterans Administration. He held numerous appointments, including Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at U of M Medical School, President of the Minnesota Psychiatric Society, as well as a variety of other positions. Dr. Mayberg was frequently recognized at the state and national level. He was honored as one of the best doctors in the U.S. in the national publication "Best Doctors". He received the Outstanding Private Practitioner Award from the Minnesota Psychiatric Society and, most recently, received the Minnesota Infinity Award from the International Anti-Aging Medical Institute. Most of all, he was revered and respected by the many people who benefited from his care. However, first and foremost, Don cared about family and friends. His life revolved around personal relationships. He was inseparable from his wife, Betty, of 34 years. No one ever saw one without the other. They lovingly blended their families and were intimately involved in the lives of eight children, 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Each and everyone who came in contact with Don felt incredibly special and important. He had a unique ability to make everyone around him a better person. One could not help but be moved by his compassion, humility, intelligence, warmth, and love. After family, friends and his practice, he enjoyed music, art, sports, and entertaining with friends and family. Don is survived by his wife, Betty Mayberg; and children, Stephen Mayberg, Susan Mayberg Coombes, Marc Mayberg, Nancy Mayberg Addington, Barbara Mayberg Pearson, Sue Montermini, Lisa Serposs, Anni Hodroff, and their spouses and children. A public memorial service will be held Sunday, October 9, 2 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1200 Marquette Avenue, Mpls. A family service and private interment will occur at Lakewood Cemetery.
