Eggert Rev. Charles M., age 90, a Priest of the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Mpls., died Friday, June 20, 2003. He is survived by a niece, Faith Ronkowski; and nephews, John and Thomas Eggert; by 17 grand-nieces and nephews, and by 36 great-grand nieces and nephews. Fr. Eggert was born in Winona and grew up in St. Paul. He attended Nazareth Hall and the St. Paul Seminary, and was ordained a Priest on June 4, 1938. His first assignment was as Assistant Pastor of St. Michael's in St. Paul, and then at Bird Island, Minn. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy's Chaplain Corps. He was assigned to the 5th Marine Corp Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He participated in the invasions of New Guinea, New Britain, and Pelelieu, all with the 5th Marines. After leaving the Navy he earned a Masters degree from Catholic University of America, and a P.H.D. in Psychology from Loyola University of Chicago. In 1950 he was appointed pastor of St. Thomas Parish in St. Paul Park, and in 1964 pastor of St. John Parish in St. Paul. While at St. Thomas Parish he taught part-time at the College of St. Catherine, and while at St. John's he served as chaplain at the former Mounds Park Hospital. He retired in 1985, and has since lived at the Byrne Residence for Retired Priests. For many years he served as the Archdiocesan Vicar for retired priests. He also served for many years as chaplain of the 1st Marine Division Association of Minnesota, and in 1996 was named Lifetime Honorary Chaplain.
