Melin John A., age 67, died peacefully on May 24, 2002, after suffering a succession of two strokes in four months' time. During his struggle to recuperate, he was able to experience an outpouring of love and support from family and a multitude of friends gathered over a lifetime of selfless living. John was preceded in death by parents, Edward and Rose, and brother, Edward. He is survived by his basset hound, Millie; sister, Marguerite Senninger and her husband, Edward of Ann Arbor, MI; lifelong friend, Ann Melin Bos and her husband, Donald Bos of Inver Grove Heights; nephew, Steven Melin and his wife, Jean of Woodbury; niece, Annette Melin and her husband, David Palmer of Eagan; nephew, David Melin of Burnsville; nephew, Thomas Melin and his wife, Jean of Elm Grove, WI; niece, Julia Cavataio of Chesterfield Township, MI, and eight grand-nephews and nieces. Born in Minneapolis, January 13, 1935, John attended elementary school, high school, and college in St. Paul and obtained a Master's Degree in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. He worked as a chemist for Continental Oil Company in Ponca City, OK and for Ecolab in St. Paul; after obtaining an additional degree in psychology, he also worked as an employment counselor for the Minnesota Workforce Center in West St. Paul. Retiring in 1998, he devoted himself to volunteer work for the Humane Society for Companion Animals and for the State Services for the Blind. This past year he was recognized by the Humane Society for 5000 hours of dog walking over the past four years. By those who knew him, he is remembered for much more: his humor, intelligence, kindness, and simple lifestyle. His wishes for cremation and private burial will be honored. A celebration of his life by family and friends will be announced at a later date. Memorials may go to the Humane Society for Companion Animals or donor's choice.
