Stimpson Harry Farnum Stimpson Jr. who served as the ambassador to Paraquay during the Eisenhower administration, died Sunday April 17, 2005 in Plymouth, MN. The Clarke County, VA resident was 91. Mr. Stimpson was born in Newton, Mass on October 16, 1913. He graduated from Noble & Greenough School, Harvard University, and The University of Virginia Law School. He married Margaret Lewis Byrd of Winchester in 1942. The couple lived in the Boston area, where he practiced law. During WWII, he served as a naval officer in the Pacific. Following the war, he returned to Boston and practiced law and later became special assistant to Massachusetts Gov. Christian Herter. He continued as Herter's special assistant when Herter became secretary of state under President Eisenhower. This led to the President appointing Mr. Stimpson as U.S. Ambassador to Paraquay in 1959. The couple moved to Clarke County in 1963, having purchased "Rosney," the former home of the Spencer- Carter family. His residence in Virginia spanned 42 years. He was a member of the U.S. Seniors Golf Association and the International People to People Golf organization. In earlier years, he was an avid sailor winning many trophies in the Osterville area of Cape Cod, where he owned a summer home. He was on the board of directors of the Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company in Mt. Jackson; a member of the board of directors of HF & TBByrd Apple Company, Timberville, and Winchester Evening Star Inc. His wife, Margaret Byrd, died in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Martha B. Stimpson, of Plymouth, MN whom he married in 1989; children, Harry F. Stimpson III (Doris), Johns C. MacMillan (Elizabeth), Martha M. Bennett (Frank), William B. MacMillan (Deborah), Cargill MacMillan III (Sally) and 21 grandchildren. Memorial Service 4 PM Monday, April 25 at Wayzata Community Church - Wakefield Chapel.
