Carl G. Stromee

Stromee The Rev. Dr. Carl G. Stromee, whose career as a clergyman, principally in Pittsburgh, Minneapolis & Wilmette, IL, spanned over 40 years, died in Tucson, AZ on March 27 of metatastic prostate cancer. He retired in 1978 from First Baptist Church, Pittsburgh, where he had served as senior minister since 1964, following a decade as pastor of Trinity Community Church in Mpls. He received his Masters in Divinity at the Univ of California, Berkeley, and his Ph.D. in psychology & philosophy at the University of Chicago. As an undergraduate he studied architecture at the Univ of Southern California but sought a career change and completed his Bachelors at the Univ of Redlands, where he met his wife, the former Margaret E. Henry, subsequently marrying her and beginning 59 years of marriage. Prior to entering the ministry, he apprenticed as an architect, designing & overseeing the construction of the House of the Future in Los Angeles. He also designed Liberty Ships in San Francisco on the eve of World War II. While in Pittsburgh he created and hosted for ABC the television show ``Faith and Today's World'', as well as a local public radio program interviewing writers, members of academia and government officials. For many years he served on the board of trustees of the University of Chicago School of Divinity. He was also a visiting minister for the National Council of Churches and had preached in England for the council. His mother and father were first generation Americans whose parents had emigrated from Scotland and Sweden, respectively, to southern California. Predeceased by his sister, Mary Durning. He is survived by his wife; son, Christopher Stromee, New York City & daughter, Victoria Stromee, Tucson, AZ. A memorial service was held in Tucson.
