Whitmyre Karen Whitmyre was a pioneer as a recipient of a double lung transplant in 1993 and was commited to living a fulfilling and productive life. She was an example of courage, commitment, determination and insight. All learned from her, in and out of the classroom. Karen was born May 8, 1946 in Webster, SD. She died April 14, 2002. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Wartburg College, majoring in Elementary Education. She received her master's degree in Special Education from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE. Karen began teaching in St. Paul, MN and continued to teach in Lincoln, NE, Minneapolis and Edina, MN. She also worked as a special education consultant in the ECU program in the Willmar School District. She taught in the School of Special Education at Luther College, Decorah, IA and Hamline University, St. Paul, MN. Karen is survived by her son, John Borchert and Petra Boysen, Zimmerman, MN; parents, Konrad and Irene Whitmyre, Willmar, MN; sisters, Janet (Marv) Gravley, Alexandria, MN, Gwen Whitmyre, Willmar, MN and Elaine (Ron) Wait, Plymouth, MN; her aunt, Eleanore; nieces and nephews as well as friends and colleagues. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 12:00 Noon at Lakewood Memorial Chapel, 3600 Hennepin Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN.
